#31 Snowboarding
January 27, 2008 by mylosh
If one would like to meet a lot of white people, one of your best bets would be to go on a Snowboarding trip. Snowboarding is the practice of skiing sideways on one ski. White people love snowboarding as opposed to basketball or football because there is a sense that it is an alternative sport outside of the mainstream. Also too many ethnic people are skiing now. White people enjoy activities that cost a lot of money and require expensive clothes. Even though pro snowboarders make far less than football or basketball players, it is an activity that is exclusive to those who have money. Below are some of the prerequsites for snowboarding
- $500 North Face or Burton Jacket
- $200 Snowpants
- $40 wool socks from Mountain Co-op
- $60 thermal underwear from Mountain Co-op
- Living in an expensive area that is close to mountains ie) Boulder or Vancouver
- $200 Snowboard
- $100 boots
- $20 to pay for your overpriced burger
- ability to act really annoying
So true. No better way to how anti-establishment you are than by wearing designer labels and a sweet board with a logo on the bottom. Pretty rad.
How about snow(anything)? Snowskiing, snowball fights, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, etc. are all damn near exclusively white enterprises. Why limit yourself to just snowboarding?
You got a couple things wrong. My snowboard was like 500 and the bindings on it were another 250. You don’t really have to live their either; for the past couple winters I just rented an apartment in Hood River for a few months of the winter. That allows me to keep my place in St. Pete year round and still get a lot of time on the mountain.
I agree, you got some of the prices wrong. My boots cost $300 (which I bought while in Japan!) and board was $600.
And no you don’t need to live near the mountains. It’s preferred to go on weeklong ski trips to far off mountains (preferrably somewhere in Europe like the French Alps) even if you live near the mountains.
Don’t forget the $80-a-day for lift tickets, or $1500 for a season’s pass.
I pooped my pants
WELL THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PERSONAL PROBLEM SIR
using the parliance of the author-
snowboarding is for the wrong type of white people, skiing is for white people, they may snowboard occasionly for “fun” but they master skiing first, and if you are ultra white you no longer alpine ski, you telemark/backcountry ski, and referring to a past ski trip in the alps is always a plus
don’t forget the lift ticket too-but if you’re really hardcore…it’s the season pass!!SICK!!!
haaha your soo right. ill just start making my own clothes on my free time with random fabrics and textiles. Or ill just cut out the logos on my gear so i dont represent anyone. that should keep me nice and dry while fighting the establishment.
Clander your name should be Chandler like that geek from Friends. oh wait thats def a show white people like, im sure of that.
I would like to see this expanded to encompass the entire Winter Olympics. Though the Jamaicans tried their hand at bobsledding (reference Cool Runnings…beer commericials with Jamaicans “training” in a refrigerator), and the time-honored Japanese superiority in figure skating, winter sports generally fire up the competitive spirit of white people. Undoubetedly the implementation of which was to protest lagging results (see the Marathon post) at winning races in the summer games.
she’s not white!
How come 60% of the snowboarders I run into are Asian, Hispanic, or Southeast Asian, then? Sorry- this one’s bunk.
Did you snowboard in Mexico and Japan?
cause in California/Utah/Colorado, theyre all white.
November, you probably we’re skiing where there is hardly any snow. Did you see any rocks popping out of the snow when you were skiing at the bunny slopes? Haha! Yes, this is predominately a white sport. Fun as hell! But white people are the masters.
Up here in Vancouver that’s definitely true. Grouse and Cypress are packed with Asians. Whistler has mostly white people, but then again, Whistler’s a skiers mountain.
Uh, its REI here in the States not MEC you dirty Canadien. $450 for a board and at least $250 for boots. And you need a new Burton jacket every year to really fit in with the whitey.
Is that a black person in the snow, or is that a good photo shop? Like, no way!
No, this ones pretty true. Kids who used to skate (or think skateboarding was cool) grew up, went to college, got a part time job (or had parents) to pay for lift tickets and cheap snowboard gear.
Now the stereotype described is more of a poseur, real grassroots kids who are passionate about snowboarding started out in jeans and timberlands with a used board and bindings.
Now my best friend (who is dark skin) and I learned to snowboard together, but he lost interest after a couple years, where I moved out west to Utah to go every day. He got serious with a job and a house. Meanwhile I was a snowboard bum for 4 years, now got a good job, but dont yet have a house
I used to like rollerskating. Ah, back in the day (circa 1976), I would strap on a pair of rent-a-skates, have Mom drive me up the elementary school, and I’d skate for hours in the school cafeteria. I still like to do that, but now Mom’s arthritis has forced me to drive my scooter up there, and a squad car usually follows me home. Go figure.
ok, are you accusing that snow boarder of being white or wearing blackface? weird way to make your point, dudes.
KZ is a confused whitey. He just said “dudes”. The snowboarder in the photo is black genius.
I’ve yet to see a white person snow-boarding in Korea. These days, snow-boarding is most popular among Korean university students, especially the women.
yah, he was referring to White people in USA….and maybe elsewhere. I’ve never seen a Korean in the Winter X-Games though. So, you can shut up now.
Erm… WTF kind of comment is that? duh, why did you ever think the author is referencing Korea? Hello you’re in fucking Asia!!! I sure hope there’d be Korean on the slopes in KOREA… I mean it is where most Koreans live, right?
Nope. Most Koreans live in Los Angeles. Korea is just a suburb of LA, separated by the Pacific Ocean.
LOL, I couldn’t even insult MigukNamja properly, I meant a dufus, idiot, nimrod…
hahaha, slopes on the slopes….
That board is a piece of crap. You want to pay about $500 for a burton board plus bindings, which may be another $120 to $200. I saw an African American at tahoe once, it was awesome!!

aren’t i funny and clever!!!
don’t you dare call me a racist!!!
i work at sugar mountain ski resort in NC as a lift operator, and this is a myth….i see asian, latin and black people all the time. to say that this is “only for white people” is completely racist and disrespectful. and you can have decent equipment without having to pay the hefty prices, its just a matter of knowing when and where to buy things, which is by no means impossible to find regardless of what “race” one is. by the way, for those of you who don’t know, race is a socially constructed concept. the difference in DNA between a white person and black person is that of about 5 or 10 chromosomes…not many at all. also, a “white” person has more in common (genetically speaking) with a “black” person than with another “white” person. look it up for yourself, get educated, fool
you probably meant genes, not chromosomes. get educated yourself.
what about location differences (i.e. different continents)? not to mention physical appearance…
I’m white and I’ve never been snowboarding. I feel cool now, like I’m on your side and not on their side.
Latin? Like from Latium?
i agree this one is off.
Why does the jacket cost more than the board?! My board was 500 and my jacket was only 150! Equipment is more important than fashion!
but this is right, I love snowboarding and my skin in pale.
Nah we white doodz just like snowboards b/c we’re compensating too, right? I mean… like dude, thats why I ride a 160…
But seriously tell us how you really feel bro…
I’ve never liked or knew how to skateboard. I’ve always sucked at all sports involving balls. I’m a total klutz, so skiing isn’t for me either; more likely to break a leg. I would rather break an arm snowboarding. I’m a 33 yr old white female who started snowboarding for the first time 2 yrs ago and not only do I love it, but am pretty good at it too!!
he has his pants tucked into his boots, hes wearing sunglasses. say no more.
My brother worked with a guy who was a boarder. He would go to Goodwill and buy his snow board clothing looking for ratty stuff.
However, many of the snowboarders pay big money for butt ugly stuff. I ran into some guys boarding the other SA and felt like telling them they had “cute outfits”.
Ha ha, my uncle lived in Boulder and then moved to Vancouver, but he’s half black! BTW, if you live in Boulder, you have to drive for quite a while to go snowboarding. Not much snow in the immediate area.
Moosejaw anyone?
Loveland and Eudora are within a 25 minute or so drive from Boulder…?? This site is stupid
lol Im a snowboarder and I’m african american and love it, I started 8 years ago and some folks thought I was crazy! but now those same non believer folks are hooked on the sport!!! funny blog LOL
Snowboarding may be a very white sport, but the ultimate is to have given up snowboarding because it is now too mainstream. By simply moving back to the skis you started with as a child you can set yourself apart as unique and better than everyone else who is still riding a snowboard. I have to disagree with this post a bit because the ultimate in white elite status is to have switched back to skiing to reconnect with your roots and such and soforth.
the prices on this are so fucked up, if you buy a board for $200 its a peice of shit.
#13 & #19 are fags because they are spending way too much on a board, just get a rome artifact or a technine for $300 and jib everything to piss off the skiers.
and if you spend $500 on a jacket you are a dickhole
and dont buy socks, just steal them out of the back of burton trucks at contests
Non-whites think snowboarding is a form of torture.
We be correct.
“Skiing” is much more white than snowboarding. As a Coloradan, and as a brown man, I can testify that in over 200 days on the slopes in the past three years, and outside of souther baptist church retreats or “community/throw-the-darkies-a-scrap” days, I have seen no more than FIVE minorities SKIING. A vast majority are snowboarding, although I’ve only seen maybe three black snowboarders and five or six “latin” snowboarders (Asians are close enough to “white” not to count)
P.S. (I ski, just to fuck with people)
ummm … maybe i’m missing something here, but wouldn’t southeast asians also count as asians, november? i mean, they are a subgroup of people from the same continent. separating them is kind of like saying that white people and white people in california both like surfing.
Fuck all of you. Snowboarding is awesome and not everyone who does it is a spoiled hipster rich kid wearing designer “anti-establishment” labels from their local rebel mall store.
I’ve seen hundreds of black, Japanese, Mexican, and Chinese people snowboarding. So there…
Can we just say snowboarding is for rich people?
So many of the things I see in the news that people try to make a race issue are really a class issue. Rich white people don’t hate the Mexicans, Africans or Asians because of their skin color. Rich white people just hate POOR people. Skin color, nationality or sexual preference don’t matter to the elite. If you have money they will like you. Just dress, act and talk like them and they will be your friend. Once you understand that you will be able to take advantage of it easily. I don’t hate white people because they’re white. I hate them if they’re hoggin’ all the power and money, were born into their status and don’t appreciate what the lower class actually does for them. Without the underpaid work a Wal-Mart employee does where would that company be?
// (hmmm.. now I wonder if rich people shop at Wal-Mart.
Just so you know, nothing constitutes that ALL white people are automatically powerful or progressive. I have seen and visited many white poor people. a class should be more justified from intelligence and mentality; think about it, every ghetto, drama-queen/king, over-exaggerated lower class income worker have the same mentality that they are being overturned by some upper class white person and that they can’t get anywhere in life. and every common wealth, politically-involved, career orientated middle class individual will think of the possibilities that they are able to do in their life and attempt to get out of the descent lifestyle that is falling apart…then the major rich, upper-class, “bring it on” type of individuals are the smart ones that know whatever life throws at them they will be more than happy to overcome. Its either live to be whatever you want, or live to complain. I’ve seen many Black, Mexican, Arabic, Asian and white people be extremely successful because they have the same mentality that allows them to see everything positively and as a success for their life.
Change your mentality and stop whining and blaming your issues on someone else. I’m not paying you rent, mortgage or food, and I’m not controlling you from getting a better job or getting a raise, YOU are in charge of that, and if you can’t get anywhere, maybe its because you don’t know how to get there.
Learn to live and live to learn, its better to know anything than to know nothing and assume.
No… we shouldn’t say that. I started about 14 years ago in Sorels with old ski boot inserts, Army surplus warehouse pants, and a used $60 board. You go to your local park and build jumps or drive up to the pass build a jump and hike all day, and that’s what you do. Buying a ticket at a resort was an indulgence. It’s a lifestyle and a sport, and its cool if tourists want to play dress up and try it out, but don’t shit on the sport.
“chris
i work at sugar mountain ski resort in NC as a lift operator, and this is a myth….i see asian, latin and black people all the time.”
eh, dude that’s because white people go to the real resorts.
read: VT, COL, UT
To all the comments asking if the person pictured is black:
No.
Another thing that white people like: Making themselves NOT look white. With the newest technologies, they can get rid of that pasty skin and get a tan, inject Botox into those flat, paper-thin lips, and take the fat from one part of the body and have it injected into their overtly flat behinds.
And with all those body modifications, what exactly is it that certain white people hate about blacks? Big lips? Botox. Darker skin? Tanning salons. Big “jungle booties?” A55 implants. Kinky, “nappy hair?” Perms. Everything that people like “anonymous” nag about is the exact same stuff that makes certain whte women “hawt.”
Forget race. I’m styll tryig to determine if the person pictured is male or female!
I agree with holler Skiing is much whiter ive seen much more diversity at Tahoe since the advent of snowboarding.
Skiing is technically difficult, takes years to become even decent at and requires proprietary gear at all levels.
A couple of observations - How white snowboarding and skiing appear probably depend on where you live - I live in Western Colorado (where there are 3 black people I think, and I’m serious) - I rarely see a black person on any of the slopes at Aspen for example - though there is more to this than culture perhaps?? I also notice that seemingly the only black person in the Roaring Fork Valley during the Winter X games (the pinnacle of white youth culture it seems) is the ESPN host Sal Masakela. Just a humorous observation, don’t rip me apart.
Another addition to this blog list could be Rock climbing. If I have seen maybe 30 rock climbers portrayed on TV (usually in SUV type comercials), maybe 10 of them were black. In the real climbing world which I have been immersed in for over 20 years, in many different geographical areas, I have maybe personally seen 20,000 climbers. Maybe 5 of them were black. So perhaps this is the truly whitest sport?? Also seemingly no hispanics. There is a growing Asian presence in climbing though.
You forgot the $800 seasons pass or the $75 per day lift tickets! I just found this blog and love it. Can’t wait to read the rest.
Several years ago I took snowboarding classes with several other Black people.
I think there was at least 10 of us.
The white instructor was frustrated by how slowly we were picking up the basics and said (I kid you not): “Come on guys! You people are natural athletes. This should be easy!”
We laughed about it then as we do now.
Crazy white folks!
Adisa: I would have gone upside my white instructors head!
anyway… I’m black, and I snowboard. I’m not a rich white kid, so I went cheap on my boots, board, and bindings (Craigslist baby!). I know only one other black person, my cousin, who likes to snowboard. But check out my setup:
-$150 board boots and bindings
-$8.98 Snowboard jacket (Steve and Barry’s sale)
-$20 snow pants from Wal-Mart
-$1 socks from a Wal-Mart clearance
-$12 gloves from Big 5 sports
-Hat I found around my house
-However much the pass costs.
I’m a frugal brotha, learned it from my daddy
I’m white and I HATE Snow boarding! I find a good percent of snow boarders are beginners. People who have a lot of time for winter activities usually ski. If you want to talk REALLY white there is nothing whiter than cross-counrty skiing!
By the way the person in the pic is back. Is this irony? We white people love that (according to this site)…
That person in the Snowboarding picture is a coloured person. Is he perhaps a member of the Snowboarder’s Negro League?
which is the surviving member of milli-vanilli? i think you caught him on the slopes.
I spent like $250 for my snowboarding weekend in Mass with friends.
Yo scoobysnax, I’ve since become a fairly serious boarder and I can do you one better on the frugality…
I made my own cable + lock combo. It cost me 3 or 4 dollars and is much more secure than that shit they sell at REI.
And you’re right, I should have gone upside old girl’s head… just to live up to another stereotype.
I know it’s the Internet and we can claim we know anyone, but I actually for realzzz know this person, and I can fully attest that white people like her.
This is False. White people ski. Many snowboards are white, but this is just because white people dominate winter sports.
All other ethnicities are afraid of snow and cold.
white people ski.
that shit is 5 times more expensive than snowboarding.
Stevie bell is black, and hes a pro snowboarder.
keir dillon is black (in skin color) and hes a pro snowboarder.
and most importantly MARC FRANK MONTOYA is latino from the inner city. heis obviously not white or rich. but he his one of the most successful snowboarders in the world.
im sorry but i have to disagree with this one. the rest are great, but as a snowboarder, i see way more black people snowboarding than skiing. and at least snowboarders dont dress gay in skin tight jackets, or vests.
well what kind of “white” people would you rather, what i like to call a yuppy hippy. or a racist republican hick would would rather support the main stream, believe anyone not white a practicing christian is a sinner and that you will go to hell for doing anything else. in all truth, id rather be a part of the yuppy hippies because as unreasonable these “likes” may be, they are mostly part of a very small subculture that has just as many stigmas as any of yours. and yes…i do snowboard…and yes i do kick some mother fuckin ass at it.
nigga ain’t white!
Don’t forget a $70 season pass to the local mountain for ‘night riding’ after work and a $100-130 dollar pass to all further away mountains for weekend trips.
the last high end snowboard that cost $200 was made in 1998. No snowboarder who’s been more than twice would be caught dead riding one so cheap. More like 700 for a board and bindings.
You can’t forget REI! Damn the corporate man AND pay a lot for outdoor sports!
