The study of white people is growing quickly. As we move forward, it’s important to recognize the outstanding work being doing by those outside of this blog.

I was preparing to write a post about how white people love “old school” hip hop, and take it very seriously. Or perhaps how they love “conscious” hip hop that so vitally addresses the problems of a community that they don’t belong to. Remember, they aren’t dancing or jogging to this music for fun - it’s for a social cause.

White people often have spiritual moments at concerts by the following artists: Common, Brand Nubian, Tribe Called Quest, and Del Tha Funky Homosapien.

Cats and Beer has kindly put together a fantastic list of the top hip hop songs that white people love.

Highlights taken from Catsandbeer.com

9. Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance

Humpty Hump was rap music’s greatest alter ego and actually a good MC but all White People know (and love) him for is “I like my oatmeal lumpy,” and “Burger King bathroom.”

F*cking White People.

8. Biz Markie - Just A Friend

Oh my god do White People love this song. Particularly frat boys. Why? I don’t know.

Unlike most of his peers on this list, the Biz is a guy long deep in the hip hop scene with lots of cred, yet to White People he’ll only ever be that fat funny-looking black guy with the wig who sings bad.

7. Young MC - Bust A Move

I believe there is a law that requires this song be played at every Rock n’ Bowl.

Like that the police shut down the bowling alley if it doesn’t comply.

6. Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock - It Takes Two

Knowing the words up to “I get stupid, I mean outrageous” is standard and unremarkable.

Knowing everything up through the hook means you’ll be frenching at 80s Night.

Damn, you’re right. Even about the frenching.

you forgot artist like Erika Badu, Lauryn Hill or OutKast - Very White accepted hip-hop

I like all those songs! Except Vanilla Ice. Seriously, he sucks. No really, I don’t like that song at all.

I’m surprised nothing by Public Enemy made any of the lists–Top Ten, Honorable Mention, or internet poll. That group and MC Hammer seemed to be the only black rappers anyone in my local suburban high school listened to circa 1990-91.

And any white person who says they didn’t like Vanilla Ice is a liar. 13 million sales of his debut album=liars.

And you think it was only white persons who bought his album? No way..

I’ve seen this list previously, and I think this is the 90’s list. There are a few Slim-shady songs missing. White people love those! lol

i have all these songs on my mp3 player.
lol

#7 White people like 90’s rap or any old school. 20 years from now, they’ll like 2000’s rap.

How did I know Baby Got Back would be #1. If the only rap lyrics you know are the ones from an outdated parody rap, something is wrong. And no you are NOT cool.

actually I agree with the original post but not so much the top 10. Sure the songs on the top ten list were huge huge crossover pop chart hits in their day with young white folk (and often whith young non white folk at the time - though nobody wants to admit it now), they only serve for naustalgia now… They are not the type of rap music that we white folk want to project that we listen to. They dont show that we know about “good” rap music… because white people want to be in the know… The original poster nailed me to the wall with

“Common, Brand Nubian, Tribe Called Quest, and Del Tha Funky Homosapien”

knowledge reigns supreme on March 31, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Why are poeple so blind? all MAINSTREAM RAP MUSIC IS WHITE PEOPLE MUSIC. think about it, in an industry that is mostly controlled by a few giant corporations are made up of mostly white people. Im talking CEOs, white collar, moustaches and monkey suits. They play these rappers like hand puppets and diverting attention away from anything articulate and progressive to glorification of one’s self and materialistic possesions. This need for material comfort and economic reassurance has played the irony card misguiding todays MC’s into doing almost anything for that little green piece of paper with a dead white slave-owner’s face on it.
ITs a well known fact that hip-hop is the word of the poeple who recieve many social and economical misjust, but when you look at record sales, its the white suburban kids who are making these “rappers” rich, who in return are abandoning their cultural empowerment and living the white american dream. Atleast this councious hip-hop that “white people love”-you stupidass- carries its own foundation and preaches the positive aspects of life. so go ahead and turn on mtv, buy into the false image of the balck man, one that has been implemented and conditioned into the youths minds as being real, fall into the death trap of the government who are making money taking your rights away just because you couldnt think outside of the box that sits infront of your couch, controlling your thoughts, ill be on the other side laughing at you ignorant mindless sheep.
THE DUMB ARE MOSTLY INTRIGUED BY THE DRUM-

I agree with easykeel–the list you linked to is a run-down of rap songs that white people ironically love. (Because white people love irony!) The conscious rap stuff is more on-the-nose with respect to this blog, which is more about the stuff that white people sincerely love.

So do your hip-hop post, man!

White clubs play Baby got back now when it’s not old school night. Something is really wrong.

Looks like you hurt someone’s feelings.
I was disappointed that Will Smith didn’t make the top ten. Also, I think Stronger by Kanye West deserves a mention at the least.

I’m white and I hate all those songs but love the Beastie Boys. Am I cool or lame?

whitetwentysomething on February 19, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Umm, howsabout some Dre/S N Double O P? White people love Snoop! I would’ve expected “Nuthin but a G thang” or “Gin and Juice” to be on the list.

And Eminem, as previously mentioned. Us white folks gave him a freakin Oscar, we like him so much!

i think you should just make a section on “world music” because white people love to collect and listen to “ethnic” music to show how much they love “multiculturalism” … some folks even go to drumming or dance classes … hey the beatles even loved ravi shankar. how many white boys drool over shakira?

I think all you people are stupid. Terrible music is teirrble music, even if you’re white. All those songs suck. Should be more along the lines of Jay-Z, Tu Pac, Biggie, Dre, Snoop… good stuff y’know. Y’all are dumb.

tally hall play an uber-white “just a friend” at concerts and such, very awesome, very good call

Of course “Baby Got Back” is number one! Allow me to illustrate: I have two cousins who are very very white, very very Christian, and got married very very young. Their wedding receptions were both pretty strait-laced–UNTIL the DJ played “Baby Got Back.” Each time, the dance floor was almost instantly full of over a hundred very young, very white, very Christian kids–and all of them knew every word.

Upper Middle Caste on February 21, 2008 at 4:18 am

Wow. Baby Got Back is the only one on the list I’ve even heard of. What about Fuck da Police? 99 Problems? Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta? 24/24? Gangsta’s Paradise?

This is the most pointless and movementless website ive ever heard of, what a waste of time, i mean im pretty sure that black people feel the exact same way as does every other race, when they listen to hip-hop. What you should be saying, dumbasses, is that its the significance of a persons fellings, outlook, insight, actions etc., that should be studied. At least it would have meaning and not directionless bitch talk. Consider this a lesson from your daddy, kids. What i just said is only common sense too, dumbasses. Let me guess, you wonder why your site gets almost no attention, right? Accidentally is why im here. I saw the title, and its made by black people im assuming. Regardless, its childish in its attempt to be made as adult oriented, intelligent, smart, psycological or whatever way you were trying to pursue “intriuge” upon the title of this site, for it to be “catchy.” Entering the site all together wasn’t disapointing, i simply entered the site to see how i could diss it, by my opinion of fact upon the title, its been fun. What a waste of space and disgrace to time and people in general, and history itself. Not only that but a waste of time like i knew it would be. Making up for the time i took to look into this i decided i would make some point and porpouse, not that it was meant to be, but cuz i felt like it. waste of time? Yes, except for my time typing to ya’ll. haha!!!!!!! Its the only time of this whole site and all its history thts legit or “not pointless.” “qoute that.” Oooooohhhhh, get a life, seriously.

seth komarnisky on February 21, 2008 at 6:49 pm

P.S.- consider me speaking to yall a good thing and a good day, night whatev, wit love, peace.

Yeah, another white guy with a stupid blog here…

And yeah, I like Tribe Called Quest, but it’s partly that I grew up in Queens, and their stuff was a big deal when I was in high school and college.

Also, frankly, White People may well like these ten, but they are pretty much all either novelty one-offs, or absolute crap.

We also have a kitchen aid stand mixer. Um. A dog as well. We recycle, too. That’s in part because we get fined here in Brooklyn if we don’t.

Seth, you state that this site gets no attention so it’s obvious that you didn’t take note of the fact that it has 2.5 million hits
and counting.

what about the stones throw & adult swim crew? mf doom, j dilla, madlib. especially popular with white hipsters. also…

I’m really, really white so I don’t like rap and hip hop(I like alternative rock and standing still at concerts) - but OK, I liked ‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
But am I the only one here who does?

upper-middle-class white kid on February 23, 2008 at 9:58 am

white people love ludacris, eminem, and 50 cent more than any of that.

lupe fiasco is gifted. top 3.

jay-z
andre 3000
lupe fiasco

These particular white demographic also gets an uncomfy feeling when Hip-Hop is violent, perverted, hard-core, or materialistic.

honorable mentions

Cypress Hill- Insane In The Membrane
Kriss Kross- Jump
Kanye West- Golddigger
Tone Loc- should have been #1
anything by Outkast

the Urban Outfitter hipsters love MAdlib and J-Dilla….and they just on board with that like 3 years ago…fukin bandwagoneers.

Amen

Anyone who says they only like “old school hip hop” needs to be kicked in the balls.
Same goes for white people who say, “I don’t like country, except for really old country.” Then you get to hear about how the music of Johnny Cash (really, Joaquin Pheonix singing on the Walk the Line soundtrack) changed their lame-ass lives.

DE LA SOUL. White People love De La Soul!!!! I posted a picture on a web site saying how much I despise the goody two shoes pricks and there was uproar……. from middle class white people!!! I love left field hip hop, but not De La……. and I’m white……..
Thought they were going to track me down and kill me….
For those who don’t know the term “stuff that white people like” is from an intro to a MF DOOM song!!!

i loved most of these posts, but the music one is dumb. its all 80s/90s, so its totally outdated.

another lame one was the natural healing stuff. most black people i know are way more into the natural, non-pharmaceutical brand of health, while most white ppl i know will take a pill for anything…

my faves so far have been: gentrification, standing still at concerts (so true!!!), bicycles, and prius.

what about star and boat (pirate-ship type) tattoos? you need to do a tattoo category!

Imagine the commotion if the title said “Top Ten Hip Hop Songs Black People Love”
Why are we whites so flexible when it comes to racial issues?

This entire site is harrowingly accurate. Are you sure you guys haven’t just been following me around my whole life and taking notes? I’m hella white yo

Oh PS. Seth Komarnisky is a complete fuck ass. Your post might have been “intriuging” had you not misspelled every other word. No wonder you don’t like this site - its content is perceptive and intelligently written. Suck my white balls Seth.

@joe:

We are remarkably flexible when it comes to racial issues, aren’t we?

Dare anyone to start a blog entitled “Stuff Black People Like.”

Don’t even make it a racist retort to this site. See what happens.

“Stuff Muslims Like” would also be a conversation stimulator, though, strictly speaking, Muslims aren’t a race.

Perhaps someone ought to think about this sorta thing…

everyone shuld loosen up, its just a blog, a funny one at that…and white people are looser with racial issues because they have nothing to be racially angry about, history has been somewhat nice to them. This site is the shit, keep it going…

white people like lil’wayne by the way…I was surprised too, but when he came to richmond, they were lined up around the block to see him, mad sweet lol

How can you have a list like this without Public Enemy? They are the ultimate self-hating latte liberal band…

A new one would be the song “Crank That” by Soulja Boy and the accompanying dance. It makes them feel like they know how to hip-hop dance just like black people.

@queenie v:

So will black people be happy when Obama’s elected President? Could they loosen up then?

I understand that having TWO BLACK SECRETARIES OF STATE may not be enough… Wait. No. I don’t understand that.

That “history’s been kind” shit is total bullshit. Did you know that the word “slave” comes from “slav,” as in “slavic people?” White people? White people were enslaved longer ago, and for far longer than blacks were. Get over it.

Awwww yeah, “I got a man”s my jam.

i’m not white but i do believe you are missing ludacris and nate dogg’s “area codes” from this list

[...] of my favorite posts is “Top Ten Hip Hop Songs White People Love,” especially this part: I was preparing to write a post about how white people love “old [...]

Why do white folks get so damn offended whenever anyone makes any observations about their behavior that are not glowing appreciation?

I’m not white. I’m not black. I love all these songs (except for Whoomp (There It Is), which I never got into, and Ice, Ice Baby). I also love all the rock songs/bands in the list of rock songs that black people love.

Whatever, it’s funny, cross-cultural stuff. There’s no need to take it so seriously.

This site is a reminder that people who approach content like this without an ability to immediately recognize the tounge-in-cheek humor underpinning it all will be somewhat offended, or at least they will not think its as funny as others do.

Generally, these people who don’t laugh are not as smart as people that “get it” right away.

And “getting racial humor” is something WHITE PEOPLE LOVE, because white people love seeming smart.

For anyone who wants more of this brand of satire and good ol’ racial chuckles, I highly suggest:

I have never liked this kind of “music” at all!

I cannot fathom what it’s all supposed to be about other than a tuneless load of twaddle.

Observer - that was definitely a moment for the lulz. Bwahaha!

Actually, I do think this stuff is funny sometimes.

It’s the asymmetry of reactions that’s always bugged me, ie: make fun of white poeple, hahaha; make fun of black people, die racist scum.

It’s just annoying, is all. Otherwise, I think this site’s pretty funny.

I almost shot soda through my nose when I read this. Awesome.

Crap. I agree 100% with all that. Especially #2.

To AJ:

This site was put together by a white dude–that’s why it’s called “Stuff White People Like”. BTW, there IS a recent blog called “Stuff Black People Like” which was put together by a black woman—I checked it out and found it hilarious. I also find this site hilarious too.

No, that ain’t total bullshit about “history being kind” to white people because you’re been the majority here in America for so long, you can afford to be flexible with racial issues—you need to explain what the hell that means. Basically to me, it means that you can just ignore them whenever you like because it dosen’t affect you one damn bit in the least. Also there’s a BIG damn difference between the way slaves in Europe and slaves here in America were treated—America has always claimed to be the land of freedom and opportunity and equal rights (which is true) yet it was willing to keep the black people it kidnapped from other countries and not give them ANY rights whatsoever, and then heaped every kind of degredation, humiliation on them, treating them like animals, stripping them of every vestige of human dignity and teaching them to hate themselves.

ANd keep in mind even after slavery ended, black folks STILL did NOT have the right to vote, or any other rights that mattered until 1964 (that’s only 44 years ago). ANd we had to fight every damn step the way for it.

Racism still exists today—it’s just gone underground and become a little bit more subtle—and it is incredibly arrogant and self-serving/extremely ignorant of you to suggest that we “get over it” . It’s hard to “get over” something that still determines for too many people in this country whether you will get a job, find a decent place to live, or being denied a job simply because your name is considered too “black”, not being able to get a good education in an inner city school because said school gets virtually no funding compared to the white surburban schools. As long as these disparities continue, black folks and other folks of color are not going to get over shit. We pay taxes too, dammit.

And color doesn’t have a damn thing to do with liking music–either you like it or you don’t. I’m black and I like jazz, some country, rap, pop, rock ‘n roll–so you’re never too black or white to like whatever!

What I meant to say was that if you like music, you like it—period. You do not have to be black or white to like certains kinds of music—it really depends on what kind of music you were exposed to a daily basis. Back when I was a teen, nobody understood how as a black girl, I could possibly like Ozzy Osbourne or any other heavy metal band (which I did like,BTW) and I felt weird as hell and conflicted about it until I started listening to and researching early rock n’ roll and discovering that black people shaped rock ‘n roll throughout its history (rarely unitl recently getting half the credit their white comtemporaries did,on top of those same white folks ripping their styles off). Finding this out made me realize that there wasn’t a damn thing weird about liking rock ‘n’ roll because it wasn’t and never had been just so-called “white” music in the first place. Still love it to this day!

Another thing: to back up what Linda said, why the hell do white folks always seem to think that just because they’re the norm (in this country anyway) that there’s something wrong with somebody, especially non-black folks, critiquing and making fun y’all for the strange, crazy things you do? I mean, here’s a white guy making fun of y’all with this blog, and yet some of you STILL have problems with it. NEWSFLASH: The world does not revolve around white people only, everybody does not (and does not have to) think/act/feel the way you do, but it amazes me how y’all STILL think everybody should do that/should kiss your asses or automatically think you’re superior because you’re white. You’re just people like everybody else on the damn planet—no more,no less. I mean, you already spent 500 years shoving your way of life down the throats of everybody you enslaved and making them hate every damn aspect of themselves BECAUSE they weren’t white, but NOOOO, that wasn’t enough—you STILL have to perpetuate to this very damn day.

For example: why the hell do white folks love their animals so damn much they treat them like human beings? What the hell is up with that shit? I mean, it amazed me how many white folks were at Michael Vick’s throat about his dog racing (which was illegal, and yeah, he should have known better,so I don’t feel sorry for him) but damn, you’re think he’d actually killed a person, the way the media damn near crucified him over it. He killed some DOGS, not people, I mean, damn, that was crazy as hell. Don’t get me wrong, I grew up taking care of dogs, cats, ants, grasshoppers, fish, turtles and 2 batches of kittens on top of that, so I love some animals, but damn, if I ever had a dog/cat again and it dies on me, I ain’t buying it no damn casket and I’m not gonna hunt down a pet cemetary to bury it in. The hell with that shit. What the hell was all that BS about Ellen DeGeneres and some damn dog she could or not get? I did not even understand that. I think the person who runs this blog should definitely do an article on that—that would be hilarious.

That’s it G.D. blame everything on the whites for all the problems of the black people, including slavery all the way back to before most of us were born. As a white man I believe like Mr. Bill Cosby, that it is ninety-nine percent black peoples behavior that causes all your problems. Us white people like people that act like human beings, who speak proper English and not have every-other word from their mouths a cuss word, mostly the words mother and fucker. White people like to be called by their name or sir and miss, not “Crackers” or “Whitey” just like black people don’t like being called “Niggers” but that is how most black people speak about us white people. White people like folks to act like human beings in public, but most black people appear in public with their pants down to their knees, their baseball caps on sideways or backwards, and they can’t talk without grabbing their crouch. They cuss in front of kids and laugh about it.
Most black people use a language other than English and if it is African, then white people wonder why you speak it because you have never been there. Black people earned the right to vote but how many of them do it? White students don’t go to school and cause damage to it on a daily basis, breaking school property, or putting graffiti on everything that they can’t knock over or tear down. Inter city schools look like war zones in Iraq and who made them look that way………..black students. White people like white people who commit crimes to be punished for them, but to most black people when they get caught robbing a liquor store, caught driving on PCP, or caught beating the hell out of some poor white guy just because he is white, they all scream “racism” that they were only arrested because they are black. Us white folks go out to eat at the same places a lot of black people go out and eat, but if we have to wait a long time to be waited on, we wait or we leave, but black people again call put racism, that they were not waited on because they are black, then they get Rev. Al Sharpton who makes his living along with the Rev. Jesse Jackson as racist to make a big deal out of nothing just to collect money from some business man who was short on help.

The other one percent of black people us white people really enjoy, like Mr. Bill Cosby.
One of my heroes is Joe Louis and in a way Bill Cosby is much like him, though Mr. Cosby has a better education they are much alike. Joe Louis didn’t want anything he didn’t earn. He didn’t gripe when he served his country in uniform, unlike traitor Cassius Clay who was to much of a coward to serve his country. Even when Joe Louis lost all his money to the IRS, he didn’t blame every white person for it. White people like black people like Mr. Cosby and Mr. Joe Louis.

Your right about one thing. the color of your skin has nothing to do with what music you enjoy. I use to love soul music and the only concert I ever saw was the Four Tops at the Carousel in Covina, California many years ago. I still listen to it at times. I hate hip hop, rapp and hard rock. I now mostly listen to classic country, probably because I’m an old man. A friend from Austria just sent me a You Tube video of a Austrian couple singing in their language and I loved it.

To seth komarnisky: Dude, I think you’re the one who needs to get a life. If you don’t like the site, then don’t bother to read it and comment. Actually, your comment would have been better, if it weren’t written in “raving lunatic” fashion.

Anyways, I saw the rest of the list at the original site. Another honorable mention should be given to Public Enemy’s “Bring Tha Noize”. Lots of us white metalheads (back in my high school days!) got into this, big-time, when they redid it with Anthrax. I still love it!

Black Guy that Likes White People on February 25, 2008 at 6:08 pm

….stuffblackpeoplelike - sniffing glue! hahaha!!!
When have you ever seen a black person sniff glue… that’s for people that dont know how to spend money. We don’t do cheap drugs. Give me some Humbolt County Weed!

….stuffblackpeoplelike - welfare! hahaha!!!
There are more White Americans on welfare in america than any other social group. And that’s without having to indure slavery and being able to vote for 250 years instead of 50+ like blacks.

…stuffblackpeoplelike - gang warfare! hahaha!!!
Have you ever seen, Godfather 1-3, Gangs of New York, Good Fellas… etc? Where in hell do you think we learned about gangs?

…. stuffblackpeoplelike - eating watermelon! hahaha!!!
Okay, you got me on that one ;)

Well, I think it’s constructive that we air this stuff out ;)

G.D.: I’m not going to pick apart your entire argument. However, I will say that none of it addresses the asymmetry I mentioned was my chief complaint in comment #52. If you think all that shit (most of which is quite valid, but some of which is *highly* debatable) gives you the right to special treatment, then I can’t really argue with that, can I? Personally, I like black people just fine. I have black friends. And it pains me to think that blacks and whites will never be comfortable around each other (or be able to coexist with each other in society at large) until we can start treating people EQUALLY. That means NO SPECIAL TREATMENT for ANYONE. No affirmative action, no ‘words whites can’t say.’ None of that shit. If you truly believe in the innate worth of black people, as I most certainly do, then you must be able to let them achieve on their own.

And I’m no animal rights activist, but Michael Vic wasn’t racing dogs, he was putting them in dog fights. Slight distinction and pretty mean.

The point is: if this “treating people differently” thing goes on for too much longer, your going to face a big backlash. There are plenty of people out there who are pretty fed up with the whining and asking for special treatment. A significant portion of the American population came over here not too long ago from circumstances not all that much better in terms of dehumanization from nineteenth-century slavery, and they’ve done quite well for themselves. You accuse me (as a proxy for whites, I guess) of being self-centered, but I say that ramming your suffering down the throats of people who have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT is self-centered in the extreme. And every time blacks do it, it sets back the ultimate goal of all those who seek racial equality in this country. There will be no equality until we start acting like it. And sometimes that means forgiving the sins of past generations, and even of those backward folks who act racist today.

Because it cuts both ways, you know: I can’t stand being lumped into a group with all of white-kind any more than you can stand being lumped into a group with all of black-kind. And to say that my reaction to the same treatment is invalid, is not only illogical and stupid, but racist and bigoted.

Okay. That’s it for tonight. I don’t normally do this sort of thing, so I don’t have much stamina for it. However, I really appreciate your response, because I think it’s important that these things be talked about in an open manner.

I totally agree with you on the music thing, though.

Damn! All that, and I put a “your” in where I meant “you’re.”
