#62 Knowing what’s best for poor people

White people spend a lot of time of worrying about poor people. It takes up a pretty significant portion of their day.
They feel guilty and sad that poor people shop at Wal*Mart instead of Whole Foods, that they vote Republican instead of Democratic, that they go to Community College/get a job instead of studying art at a University.
It is a poorly guarded secret that, deep down, white people believe if given money and education that all poor people would be EXACTLY like them. In fact, the only reason that poor people make the choices they do is because they have not been given the means to make the right choices and care about the right things.
A great way to make white people feel good is to tell them about situations where poor people changed how they were doing things because they were given the ‘whiter’ option. “Back in my old town, people used to shop at Wal*Mart and then this non-profit organization came in and set up a special farmers co-op so that we could buy more local produce, and within two weeks the Wal*Mart shut down and we elected our first Democratic representative in 40 years.” White people will first ask which non-profit and are they hiring? After that, they will be filled with euphoria and will invite you to more parties to tell this story to their friends, so that they can feel great.
But it is ESSENTIAL that you reassert that poor people do not make decisions based on free will. That news could crush white people and their hope for the future.

Narrow-mindedness has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative. Being narrow-minded means deciding once and for all that whatever you think is wholly true and not opening your mind to any other opinion. Whether you are liberal or conservative, democratic or republican, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you open yourself to the opinions of others, even if you do not agree with them, and consider the possibility that you, or they, may have the wrong idea. You have to take what you know, decide on what you think, and then constantly re-evaluate your opinions when you receive new information to decide if you actually agree with what you have decided. This does not mean that to be open-minded you have to change your ideas every time you learn new information, but it does mean that you have to be willing to consider another perspective.
McCain knows what’s best for poor people. They should stop being poor.

I have to admit this list is hilarious because most of it is accurate. However, there are repeated suggestions that “white people” are democrats and left-wing liberals. As a whole, the “white people” you are describing are Republicans. I consider myself an expert because I fit the bill according to all your other premises: I attended a University where I majored in art history, studied abroad in Paris, lived in NYC for 4 years, and I love Whole Foods. I also love breakfast places, vintage t-shirts, and running marathons. I am NOT a democrat. Furthermore, I do not have one white friend that is a democrat. We are Republicans by and large, because we don’t want to give away our hard-earned money and/or inherited money to the unemployed population who are too lazy to work or too stupid to quit having kids they can’t afford. I believe you are mistaken about the political preferences of “white people”. And for the record, I think Obama is a racist pig.
You know, I hate to tell you, but the fact is that you are a democrat and just haven’t come to realize it yet. It’s like people who go the majority of their life not realizing that they’re gay. No doubt, though, that you will wake up one day soon and go, ‘oh shit, I AM a democrat’. Okay… I’m pretty certain that Republicans are “the wrong kind of white people”. This describes upper middle class Americans to a tee, most of whom are white Democrats. And I’m pretty certain that you’re one of the wrong kind of white people, though that’s not a bad thing.
However, there is a great deal of sharing of fads regardless of party affiliation or moral beliefs, but some of these things are pretty much only for Democrats. (See: Obama, Liking religions not liked by parents, etc.)

I do not want to be white. My goal in life is not to be white. Native ideology’s, principles, and ethics are far superior. People do not understand it. I sometimes laugh at other Natives or minorities who buy into the mainstream, primarily because they are blind to what is going on around them. A Native would be nuts to buy into and to assimilate into white American culture (lol)………

To answer this question, “Does shopping at Wal-Mart make me less white?” If there is a Target within 10 miles of where you live and you choose the Wal-Mart, yes it makes you less white. If you live in Wyoming or New Hampshire where there are only Wal-Marts near you, then by default you must go to the Wal-Mart. (There are very few Black people in these areas, thus no need for a Target). Target was created to steal the white people from Wal-Mart, which I believe it has done successfully. Speaking of things that white people like…how about Target?
I highly disagree. If you know people in the south, you’ll know that plenty rich white people shop at Wal-Mart. (and they have targets nearby).
I think it all depends on your geographical location. I live in Minneapolis and here; mainly poor, dirty people shop at Wal-mart…or middle class people looking for a bargain (but they tend to shop at Target most of the time).
As my husband once said, “Everybody shops at Target - even the Hollywood rich types…only poor people shop at Wal-mart”.
