#68 Michel Gondry
February 17, 2008 by clander
In putting together the canon of directors that white people like, we must include Michel Gondry. He directed such white classics as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, and Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. Oh, that’s right Charlie Kaufman, Gael Garcia Bernal, AND Dave Chappelle - could it get any better for white people? Oh yes, it can.
You see, Michel Gondry got famous by directing videos for The White Stripes, Massive Attack and Bjork. These are three bands that, at some point in their lives, all white people have thought were cool.
Between the ages of 16-20, all white people go through a phase where they aspire to become a music video director. This is followed shortly by a phase where they want to become a regular director. But in both cases, they don’t want to produce generic content, they want to create art. As a result, the two directors who have achieved this (Spike Jonez is the other) are universally beloved by
white people.
If you look at the DVD collection of a white person (even those without a TV), it will contain “The Work of Director Michel Gondry” (pictured).
This can be used to help find common ground with white people. Talk about how you wanted to direct music videos after you saw Michel Gondry’s video for “Around the World” by Daft Punk. Then make a joke about how foolish you were at that age and everyone will have a good laugh. But they will also feel your pain about sacrificing your artistic dreams.
The observant among you will probably be aware that the white person wet dream “Be Kind, Rewind” is about to be released. This might be the biggest event in white person film since The Royal Tenenbaums.
Darjeeling Limited best quote for white people…
“Did you just f*ck that Indian Girl?”
White people love brown
Suggested post: David Lynch
I pooped my pants
White=Yellow
I refuse to believe that it gets any better than Gael Garcia Bernal. I’ll not be swayed.
I’m white and have been for a long time and I have never heard of Michel Gondry.
im asian , and i love Michel Gondry and indie music.
then you are what is known of as ‘the wrong kind of white person.’
words up, homeyslice. I never heard of him/her either. Guess I ain’t white enough.
Despite legions of white people liking him, Michel Gondry actually is quite talented and original. His movies su-huh-huck, but his videos are transcendant.
Suggested post idea:
White people who throw out an S.A.T. word unnesessarily to describe something mundane.
Its ‘transcendent’ not ‘transcendant’. White people like correcting other white people, especially pretentious ones…
Between the ages of 16-20, all white people go through a phase where they aspire to become a music video director.
Not me. I think things like that are stupid.
And I hate grizzled old rock musicians.
So there.
This blog is hilarious satire! It’s so funny. I’m bi-racial (german/scottish and african american), which can sometimes leave you with the ever hilarious/troubling paradox of “Am I white or am I black?”. I was reading post #68 and I thought, “I certainly think Bjork is cool…I must be white! Glad that’s cleared up.” Then kept reading, “Hey! I wanted to direct music videos when I was 16-20 too! That’s two…I guess even though I am 1/2 black, I must be white.” But then, “Oh, wait, I don’t own ‘The Work of Michel Gondry’. I did seriously think about buying it, but never did. I must be black!” And…”But I did seriously love the ‘Around the World’ video….white? But I don’t think it’s foolish, I still totally think it’s great…black?!?”
After considering the evidence, I am forced to conclude that I am, in fact, both black AND white although this is seen as impossible in human american culture.
[...] but for tonight I wanted to keep the humor theme going. Here is a comment I posted on an entry about Michel Gondry, a director that white people like:“This blog is hilarious satire! It’s so funny. I’m [...]
Don’t forget David Fincher who also did music videos and whom white people, particularly young white male frat boys, love.
I think you mean ‘white hipsters,’ not ‘white people.’
Never heard of this guy, nor do I care. I’m still feeling sorry for people who get confused when I try to explain the difference between Spike Jones, known as “The Man Who Ruined Music”, and Spike Jonez, known as the man who solidified “Don’t try this at home” in music video disclaimers.
This is disgustingly accurate. I think Max Renn is very right about this being of mainly white hipster variety.
My white hipster friend brought her copy of that Gondry DVD around with her, (well us) everywhere for weeks. Often pulled it out randomly during our trip to Toronto while frequenting indie coffee shops or clothing stores where the possibility of another hipster noticing her elite purchase was significantly increased.

I’ve always loved his videos and I like his films as well. I can’t wait for his next film Be Kind Rewind. Looks like it’s going to be a good one.
Okay, this comments thread makes it clear that the next entry in this blog has to be #71: “Arguing to no-one in particular that you’re not like other white people.”
That one guy is a racist.
LOL! That was so me. Still is….
I have my music video planned out in my head. It involves recycling. I’m not kidding.
I love you, writers.
You know what’s really white? All the multi-racial people who comment here and brag about how great they think the satire is.
I think you mean ‘white hipsters,’ not ‘white people.’
The essential joke behind this blog is that ‘white people’ is used to refer to urban hipsters/yuppies. For this reason, multiple posts refer to the distaste that ‘white people’ have for the wrong kinds of white people, e.g. Republicans and other undesirables.
Stuff Black People Like:
-Being Uneducated
-Guns
-Rape
-Stealing
-General Crime
-Money
-Escalades
-Crack
-AIDs
Just a few hilarious ideas I’ve come up with if you ever decide to expand your site.

How about a sense of humor?
I’m white and again I have no idea who the hell a person mentioned on this page is.
“This might be the biggest event in white person film since The Royal Tenenbaums.”
+20
Stuff hilarious commenters like:
- Repeating the same joke multiple times
- Taking mysterious offense at satirical blogs
- Equating “white people like Michel Gondry” and “black people like AIDS”
[...] kept talking yesterday about how he was So! Psyched! to go see Be Kind, Rewind, but … Entry #68 on the Stuff White People Like blog: Michel Gondry. The observant among you will probably be aware [...]
again, this is just another prime example of what some people don’t understand about dejected Euro-trash grunge rockers in their attempt to be politically savvy…I suggest if you want to engage yourself, that you become a communist.
I totally own this DVD. I’m such a whitey.
Another thing white people like: stereotypes about themselves.
but is it a stereotype if its not a bad thing? i dont know.
also, what does “stuff black people like” have to do with anything? are you assuming the person who writes this blog (or people, for all i know) is black? are you racist?
okay first “Between the ages of 16-20, all white people go through a phase where they aspire to become a music video director. ” only applies to people who were born in 1970 or later, I actually wanted to be a cowboy like everyone else white born pre 1970 (and male or lesbian).
but the desire to be a director is tied into a desire to be responsible for taking a work of art (such as it is) and bringing it to life. not just as an actor or a writer but as the person who controls it all.
art is greatly respected in white culture as it transcends reality and interprets feeling and emotion. however we cannot all be artists, ie actors and writers, we hope however that we can recognize it when it is dropped into our laps and bring it to full fruition. hence the desire for non-artistic people to glom onto the talent train as the guy who says “action”
Back when I used to be black, I liked Michel Gondry, but technically it’s not “back when I used to be black” because as soon as I began to like Michel Gondry I turned white. So now I’m living proof that white people like Michel Gondry.
Who the hell is Michel Gondry?
You should probably quit hanging around with latte liberals. Just sayin’.
- Taking mysterious offense at satirical blogs
Seriously. Anyone who is offended by this needs to get his head checked.
Also, to #12 & #19 Anonymous Cowards: Die in a fire.
Gondry’s flashy but shallow “Eternal drivel of the arthouse mind” was perfect for white folk, as it contained many of the things you see here - not least of which are people issues like separation, pain, angst, caring, wiping memories and starting again… and it is just so truly deep we could weep.
You have completely skewered me. I’m an elitist hipster living in San Francisco and I think Charlie Kaufman might be my favorite artist. Out of the 4 DVD’s I own, one of them is the Spike Jonze Music Videos. Dave Chappelle is the only famous comedian I’ve seen live and I’ve seen him three times. I’m pretty excited about Be Kind, Rewind, and I even loved Juno. I’m so freaking white. Last year I went to a wedding in India. How stoked was I??
#31- I love you.
he’s alright, but I have to say you can’t fuck with Bjork… I love all her music!
Hey, I feel excluded…what about European European whites? You know the ones that stayed in the old country while they others..well, we all know what the others did. Can you come up with some stereotypes for whites like me who were born and raised in Europe and don’t catch on to most of the stuff that’s posted on here? Like who is Michel Gondry? And what about co-ed sports, expensive coffee err, sandwich shops? I don’t get it…or wait. Maybe that’s because I’m not only white but blonde at that.
eternal sunshine… good movie, no niggers
I think the term you’re looking for is “negro” not “ni**ers.” Or, if you’re my grandparents, “coloreds.”
What the hell do you mean, no n—–,Whitey! I’m black and I loved this film, so fuck you and your stupid racist ass. And hell no, me liking it does not equate it to me wanting to be white–it was simply a damn depressing, but good film.
TO Anonymous: Your bullshit racial jokes aren’t funny. I’m black and I know black folks that have never been into ANY of that shit. White people do that same shit too—it’s just that since y’all are the majority, nobody calls you out for doing it.so you just get away with it.
ANyway, I like this blog–it’s hliarious, despite racist MFs posting stupid-ass shit like I just mentioned.
again - is it just me or do almost all of these posts make it look like the bloggers’ perception of people is based entirely on the williamsburg hipster brand of white people?
Thanks for keeping me posted. I can’t believe I missed out on this little crumb of whitehood.
I’ve always kind of disliked Michel Gondry, and thought Eternal Sunshine was really over-rated (white people enjoy thinking semi-popular things are over-rated) but I’m embarrassed to say that I am really excited about Be Kind, Rewind.
In general this blog is appallingly accurate, although a post about vinyl and non-digital photography is essential.
Also, “This might be the biggest event in white person film since The Royal Tenenbaums.” Sad but true.
Hey as long as you’re hitting movies, did you get The Big Lebowski?
ok this site is so true!!! I am so white!
i found out about Michel Gondry in art school.
[...] half-a-page down and I started laughing hysterically. Here’s an excerpt from their post about Michael Gondry: In putting together the canon of directors that white people like, we must include Michel Gondry. [...]
[...] FYI, you probably like Michel Gondry if you’re white. [...]
You mention Gondry and Jonze but not Chris Cunningham? Why? What have you got against him?
I used to think that white people liked satire, but judging from some of these comments, and the people taking this site not only literal, but factual…makes me rethink that.
and Anonymous’ 19 & 12…you’re not shocking, thought provoking, or funny…..try, sad, childish, lazy, and so very 90’s
Michael Bay actually got his start as a music video director, too - he directed all the music videos for Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell II. And he is not beloved by white people - or, at least, not the right kind of white people.
A hipster wouldn’t like Michel Gondry. A hipster *used to like* Michel Gondry, before he sold out and started producing things like DVDs and Music Videos.
Important distinction.
Proud to say I’ve never cared for The White Stripes or Massive Attack.
*whistles nonchalantly*
hey candipearl
this blog isn’t exactly “shocking, thought provoking, or funny” either, is it? In fact couldn’t it be described more as “sad, childish, lazy, and so very 90’s”?
An NPR story which contains a review of a Michel Gondry film featuring Mos Def.

A “STUFF WHITE PEOPLE LIKE” TRIFECTA!
white hipsters? thats bit redundant. you’re not white if you’re not a hipster.
lols
I have that DVD. It’s wonderful.
But I fucking hate The White Stripes. Always have.
Though my pant-staining love for Massive Attack and Bjork probably makes up for it.
RE: anonymous, etc.
I’m white. I’m not offended by this website. I think satirizing racial stereotypes can be an effective way of dissolving them, but I think once you’ve chosen to satirize one race or group of people, you’ve opened the door to ALL of them or you’ve made yourself a hypocrite.
If this website was about “hipsters” (as suggested by some posters) it would be called as such. These are racial stereotypes.
If anonymous wants to start a site like Post #19, be my guest.
How are they “racial stereotypes?” Almost every one of these entries is based on something that is loved specifically by hipsters (regardless of race - yes, there are black, latino, asian hipsters)
I know white people love him, but can you blame them. I love him too, his videos are amazing.
This one seems to be jumping the gun a bit. White people love one of his movies, but I don’t think he’s done enough for his name to have truly penetrated white culture consciousness.
And the only music video white people like is Thriller. You know that.
re: post 55
the site isn’t called “stuff hipsters like” it’s called “stuff white people like” even though the former WOULD probably be more accurate
also, white girls really like wearing yoga clothes all the time. i don’t know if that is in here somewhere already
and we like thriller
Hmm.
I do like Michel Gondry’s stuff. But AFA the rest of the stuff on this blog, can’t say I really identify either way with it.
I’ll be the first one to tell you that I am as white as a ghost, yet I don’t really find this blog to be worth nothing more than a couple of chuckles, and nothing to bust an ovary or testicle over.
I wonder, though: how many of us white folks view many of these stereotypes with a smattering of ambivalence? I’m sure many of you probably feel the same way I do, that it’s ‘not me’ this blog is describing, or whatever it does describe, describes it with a wink and a smile.
Nice thing about being white, aside from running the country, these stereotypes won’t really occasion anything more than mild discomfort. Certainly not keep us out of the boardrooms or public office. We just need to get rich first.
Michel Gondry is French he doesn’t count. French stuff is cool for all races. Look at La Haine. It was the hippest United Colours of Beneton ad ever. Daft Punk is so black it gets sampled by black people all the time, like Kanye West who is the whitest black rapper going, he’s so white he makes Tiger woods look black. French stuff is usually so cool it transcends all things racial. Except Jean michel Jarre.
ps
British White people like Barrack obama too. What does that mean????
With all due respect, this site doesn’t make any sense. No one has heard of Michel Gondry. White people complain about gentrification all the time. I think the creators of this site should concentrate less on quantity. “Expensive Sandwiches” is just not an adequate topic even for a tongue-in-cheek essay. I think you should concentrate on bad leftist policies, rather than trivialities that annoy you because you think leftists do them more than other people.
I never heard of this guy until your blog.
Blog owner STILL has not addressed the “goth/renaissance faires/LOTR/SCA/historical re-enactments/Star trek/wicca/costumes/ ” White People connection.
Really, we’re not keeping non-whites out of those things purposefully, in fact, there’s a site called “ethnic goths” .
Those people must be stopped. That is OUR territory, kind of like mexicans believe about “aztlan” .
Srsly, is this ridiculous or what? Link
http://silentconsort.wordpress.com/2008/02/18/yeah-yeah-incorrect-schmincorrect/
To be fair, if you imagined these kind of generalizations in a different context, the results would be much more entertaining. White people in general couldn’t care less about being stereotyped.
But, in spite of that, titling your future project “things negroes like…” for example might generate more interest.
this shit is so fucking funny, and to Anonymous, you are really ignorant, but I have to admit I chuckled at Escalades….black people do love some Escalades
